For local growers like Hamakua Christmas Tree Forest on Hawaii Island, they’re already selling to accommodate the impacts from mainland farms.

“You can tag a tree, you can pay for it and put a tag on it, and then come back and get it in a month or so when you actually want it,” said Richard Bradwell, owner of Hamakua Christmas Tree Forest. “That way you can guarantee getting a tree without having to worry about it later. That seems to be where everybody’s worried about, that the trees wouldn’t be available.”

We also had a chance to chat on video with the “forester” and owner of the Tree Forest so you could learn more about the trees and the company.

TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS TREES

Hamakua Christmas Tree Forest

Hamakua Christmas Tree Forest is located on the Hamakua coast near Honomu. There they grow Portuguese and Arizona Cypress, varieties selected for the Big Island due to their hardiness and sustainability.

The trees are drought tolerant and highly aromatic. Walk through the field of trees and pick just the right size and shape for your home. You can pick out and pay to reserve your tree if you want to pick it up later or take it home on the same day.

They also have small potted trees in two or four foot sizes.

Hamakua Christmas Tree Forest is now open every day 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (no appointment needed)!

Do Christmas trees grow in Hawaii? You might be surprised, but they DO! While large retailers like Home Depot, Lowes, and Costco import a shipment of live Christmas trees every year, there’s something special and sustainable about cutting down your own locally grown tree.

Lucky for us at Kuwili Lani, we have a Christmas tree farm located just 7 miles away in Nīnole. The Hāmakua Christmas Tree Forest has beautiful, reasonably priced trees, with a 5 ft tree starting at $50. The owners Nancy and Rich Bradwell are friendly and will help you find the perfect tree.

They grow Portuguese Cyprus trees which have long fluffy needles, a nice Christmas-y aroma, and a lovely light green color. They also offer small and large potted trees which you can take home and plant. For your convenience, you can reserve and pay for a tree ahead of time on their website. Visit them at: 32-122 Piha Kahuku Rd, Ninole, HI 96773.

Choose an ʻĀina-friendly tree for the holidays

Fresh cut pine trees from the mainland are a popular choice for holidays, even here in tropical Hawai’i – but imported live trees pose a serious risk to our islands. In past years (and even in 2020), snakes, wasps, and slugs have been found in shipments of Christmas trees and other foliage used for holiday decorating.

A 2015 USDA study found that importation of live plant materials is the highest risk pathway for introduction of new pests and diseases to Hawaii. Pests that have come in recently, such as little fire ant, coqui frog, semi-slug, and more, were all introduced accidentally on imported plant material.

We don’t have to put our islands at risk to celebrate the holidays! There are sustainable alternatives here on the Big Island. Local tree growers sell out quickly due to high demand, but consider a “tropical tree” to make your Hawaiian holidays special. Our local nurseries can suggest many great possibilities for you and your family to enjoy.
